Two UCSB sociology grad students discuss the world of pop culture and entertainment as viewed through a more critical lens weekly on KCSB 91.9 FM in Santa Barbara. We like to think of it as a smarter, more critical version of Entertainment Tonight.

KCSB's Pop Life 07-26-05

KCSB's Pop Life 07-26-05 (33.7 MB)

today's topics include AMC's decision not to carry the movie the aristocrats in its movie theaters, the cliche of live prime time television, al pacino hooking up with rose mcgowan, and we have the obligatory discussion on podcasting and whether or not it will change our lives...just like tivo was supposed to...or like blogging was supposed to...or like broadband was supposed to...or like how VoIP was supposed to, ughh. whatever. as always, we check the charts, celebrate celebrity birthdays, and gossip about celebrity romances. enjoy!

subscribing to the pop life podcast via itunes

i'm really kicking myself for ever having taken down our podcast from the itunes music store. i've submitted the new feed well over a week ago and i have no idea whether or not apple is going to do anything with it. however, as i mentioned, for those of you don't want to go through the trouble of getting more software to subscribe, i just found out that you can still subscribe to the feed in itunes even though we're not listed. here's a thorough explanation of the process, but it's pretty simple. just click on the advanced menu in itunes, then select "subscribe to podcast...". a dialog box will pop up asking you to type in the url of the feed, at which point you can type in:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/KCSBPopLifePodcast

and then click ok. then you're all set. for those of you who are subscribing via the old xml feed, well, i've decided that since it takes exactly zero effort from me to maintain it, i'll just keep it going, so you don't need to do anything.

i just went through some discussion threads and there's some talk that it is taking apple close to two weeks to get podcasts up in their directory, so like i said before, i'll continue to keep you updated on the status of us being listed on the itunes podcast directory.

KCSB Pop Life Radio Show from July 19, 2005

KCSB 91.1 pop life radio show from July 19, 2005 (30.2 MB)

todays topics include the harry potter phenomenon, the irony of TIVO selling commercials, extremely mild controversy surrounding the dukes of hazzard movie and the guy who played cooter (heehee!) on the original show, and our take on the emmy nominations. and as always, we check the charts, gossip about celebrity romances, and celebrate celebrity birthdays by speculating about who is lying about their age. the KCSB studios are closed for remodeling, so we had to get reacquainted with the KJUC setup and that took a while so the show is only an hour and a half instead of the usual whopping two hours.

KCSB Pop Life Radio Show July 12, 2005

KCSB 91.1 pop life radio show from July 12, 2005 (34.2 MB)

sorry this is a day late. we're moving from cds to cd-rws and it took a little bit of a learning curve to make sure that i was using them right. anyways, today we cover a wide range of topics including, the knight rider dvd, the celebrity court cases, and the wikipedia coverage of the london bombing. enjoy!

p.s. we're still not listed on itunes. i hope i didn't screw us by taking it down and trying to repost it, but i'll keep you updated as i figure stuff out.

Podcast url changed

i'm screwing with the xml feed to make it more itunes friendly, so there is a new xml feed that you need to subscribe to if you are doing the whole podcasting thingee. you can either click here or point your podcast software to:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/KCSBPopLifePodcast

i've just reloaded the podcast to itunes, so if you are doing that whole thing, you'll have to resubscribe there as well. it's not up on the itunes yet, so it may take a few days for itunes to start listing us again.

lastly, the old xml feed is still working, but i would recommend switching over, as i don't think i'll be maintaining that one as vigilantly.

sorry if i've inconvenienced you. i've already made the changes on the xml button on the right. so you can always just click there. we've got a show tomorrow morning so hopefully we'll talk to you then.

pop life radio show now available via itunes

the new version of itunes has podcast functionality built in (you can download it here). for those of you with ipods, you can now subscribe to our feed simply by going to the podcast directory which is located in the itunes music store and then typing in "pop life" into the search box. our podcast should be the first selection. click on subscribe and whenever you sync your ipod, the latest episode of pop life will automatically be delivered to your ipod every week for listening on the bus, car, or while you work out. those of you without ipods can still have the show downloaded automatically to itunes and listen to it on your computer. very cool.

of course, you can still subscribe to the podcast via other podcast software by directing your software to the xml feed.

also, for those of you who don't have ipods, i still heartily recommend itunes as a default music player for your computer. it's functionality pretty much blows anything else i've seen out of the water.

KCSB Pop Life Radio Show, July 5, 2005

KCSB 91.1 pop life radio show from July 5, 2005 (35.7 MB)

today's topics include live 8, the cancellation of welcome to the neighborhood, and shifting racial demographics in hip hop audiences. we also speculate wildly and irresponsibly on the nature of the vince vaughan/jennifer aniston romance. also new music from sleater-kinney, garbage, and the pernice brothers. enjoy!
